Hey everyone I bought my first kayak for fishing and as a complete beginner to yak fishing, I had some questions I’m hoping this group can help with. I know there are a lot of different opinions out there on what gear is “needed” and was wondering what are the things you have found you can’t do without? Obviously a PFD and a paddle, but I was wondering about all the other gear and accessories out there. Thanks for your help.

Thanks Terry. I picked up a fishing pfd and whistle. I also got a net hoping that will help me tip over less by not reaching beyond my center of gravity. I’m hoping to take it out next week and will keep you posted on how good, bad and ugly it goes.
I actually make it to be a good practice to have it with me while wade fishing.
Found this Kayaking Life Jacket Law – One life jacket on board per person. Illinois law requires children under 13 to wear their life jacket on all boats 26′ and under. ... Kayaking Sounding Devices – Required only for vessels 26 feet and longer; however carrying a whistle is recommended.
Good to have a whistle on hand also.
Keep it simple at First Get out on the water and fish to test out what you are comfortable with and what you feel you need. A lead line that you attach around your waist is a must have in rivers but may not be needed if your in a lake an anchor works better in lakes than on a river in most circumstances I would recommend a net. A lot will depend on where and how you fish I personally carry too much gear but I carry gear that makes me comfortable and some extra gear just in case I get caught in a storm (rain gear) or feel like relaxing on the shore (Hammock Setup) I also carry a first aid kit and fire starting kit, and water filter if I am on a somewhat remote area. I am somewhat of a amateur survivalist and like to practice my skills while Outdoors
Great question! I’ll reply when I get off the road.
