Return to Kilbuck 2023

Friday, January 27, 2023 @ 14:12 Hours

As we begin to head into the 2023 early Spring smallmouth bass fishing season, I would like to take this time to officially announce my return, after about a two year hiatus. I sure have missed this little gem and cannot wait to step foot in it's waters once again. I plan to keep a log of the creeks health and clarity as it tried to recoup from a decade of abuse from a local landfill.

In 2019 the Army Corps of Engineer's instructed the landfill that there were some problems within their (the landfill) discharging practices into the creek and that the problems needed to be addressed and corrected by Spring of 2020 or there would be fines. Covid happened so I gave them an extra fucking year. So from this date and time going forward my eye is back on Kilbuck.

Follow along as I keep my Home Water safe.

I know I’m stupid but I’ve done this back and forth float/paddle a couple of times. I enjoy it. You gotta do it before the mosquitoes get too bad but that goes with anything Kilbuck. It's an all dater.

No I have not. The only place I’ve ever heard anybody putting in at is Rt. 72. I saw a guy and his wife floating down once and they said that they put in at 72. I’m not sure what the water looks like up that way but I wouldn’t be comfortable floating the lower section of Kilbuck in an inflatable kayak. Lots of downfalls.

Cool! Have you ever floated past the landfill?

Yep. I’m sure the landfill moguls would like nothing better than to crucify you upside down. I think I’ve seen just about every video Tom Lindblade ever produced including the Kilbuck one you just mentioned.

Seems the landowners on Rt 72 haven’t gotten any friendlier the last couple decades or so.

Smallmouth Hunter,

One of the biggest reasons I signed up for this blog was to stay abreast of your efforts to make certain the Kilbuck remains a topnotch bronzeback fishery. Yours is assuredly a noble and notable endeavor and I suspect there is a special place in heaven reserved for folks like yourself (years and years down the road, of course). Needless to say, I will look forward to updates. Many thanks.

I have fished Kilbuck, but not enough. Waded around both county forest preserves. Floated down to Hinchcliff (sp?) a couple times. Stream is so beautiful I almost forget to fish! Wish more upstream access were available. Hope to get in a lot more visits this year. I may even try floating all the way up by Lindenwood this spring.
